Have you ever wondered about who wears different athletic shoes, like Converse and Vans, or Sketchers and Jordan’s? I predict that African Americans males favor Air Jordan’s while mostly white hipsters, rockers, and other subculture types perennially buy new Converse.
There have been murders over Air Jordan’s in black communities for years. Air Jordan’s, in particular, have played a big part in the media for awhile. According to CBSNews in an article as recently June 9, 2017, a man shot a 17-year-old boy in Detroit who was trying to sell a pair of Nike Air Jordan’s.
I interviewed a white male, sophomore Danny Marshall; and an African American male, sophomore Sheridan Jones on the topic of shoes.
Mr. Marshall has said he spent “at least $2,000” on athletic wear. I also asked Mr. Jones and he said he has spent “more than $1,000.” Students today usually have a specific style or fashion. Mr. Jones said he buys his shoes for “comfort” or “to stunt.” He also picks his shoe based on something he can “swag.”
I also wanted to figure out if my “prediction” is correct, so I asked Mr. Jones if Jordan’s or Vans were free what shoe would he pick.
“Jordan’s, of course,” said Mr. Jones.
I asked Mr. Marshall which shoe would he pick and his answer surprised me.
“Jordan’s because Vans are for people who can’t afford Jordan’s,” Mr. Marshall said.
I asked Mr. Marshall how many Vans, Chucks, or Jordan’s he had and he said, “I have 5 pairs of Jordan’s, no Chucks or Vans.”
Asking Mr. Jones the same exact question he responded that he only owns Jordan’s.
“At least 10, and, no, I don’t have any of the other shoes,” said Mr. Jones.
My prediction that African Americans males favor Air Jordan’s while mostly white hipsters, rockers, and other subculture types perennially buy new Converse wasn’t as correct as I thought it would be.
