Horoscopes: Fact or Fiction?

By Hannah Amburn

In today’s day and age, horoscopes have become a part of American culture.

“I’m a Gemini. I read my [horoscope] everyday! I like them but I don’t believe them,” said senior Cassie Coffman.

Horoscopes are a forecast based on the positions of the planets and stars, and a person’s birth month. If you look in The Virginian- Pilot Daily Break section there is a daily column dedicated to horoscopes.

“I have my husband read my daily horoscopes from the newspaper in the mornings. It makes my day a little better when it says that something good will happen to me. We like to joke about whose horoscope is better, even though I don’t really believe in that kind of stuff,” said Jennifer Tuttle, an employee at Greenbrier Lighting.

Originally, horoscopes were created for fun and to swindle people, but more and more people today look at there horoscopes.

“I’m a Aquarius. I probably look at mine everyday because I see them on Twitter. Yeah, I don’t believe all of them, but generally most,” said senior Sean Harding.

There are hundreds of websites, apps and papers that claim they can tell people’s horoscopes accurately. The Catholic Church, however, has a different opinion on horoscopes.

“All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to ‘unveil’ the future. Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone,” states the Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 2116.

Can horoscopes predict how your day, week or year is going to be?

“Because stars are millions of light years away, the [shooting] stars you are seeing now are dead ,” said science teacher Eric Butryn.

From this we can conclude that it is not in fact possible for horoscopes to predict how a person’s day will be. The position of the stars and planets humans see are from eight years ago. It is not possible to make an accurate prediction of someones day from that.

Horoscopes are fiction, but it is still fun to read them every once in awhile.
